"I was reluctant to start meditation because I assumed the goal was to stop thinking and achieve bliss. That sounded impossible. What surprised me in mindfulness was the view that: we are not trying to eliminate thoughts, we’re practicing friendliness toward our own minds—noticing what arises, without judgment or fixation, gently returning to the breath.
The other radical idea for me: there’s no goal. Just sitting. Breathing. Noticing. Labeling “thinking.” Returning. Not transcending. But the byproduct of that gentle practice seems to be a quality of spaciousness between thoughts, genuine compassion, the sense of stability and less reactivity to life.
I came to meditation for relief from monkey mind. As my teacher says, we learn to make friends with the monkey."
